Apply Tag

Overview

The “Apply Tag” action in Groundhogg is a flow step that assigns a specific tag(s) to contacts who reach that point in the automation process. Tags help segment contacts for targeted marketing, tracking behavior, or triggering further actions.

The image displays a panel under the "Actions" tab (highlighted in green), with other tabs labeled "Triggers," "Logic," and "ALL." The "Actions" tab contains six icons with corresponding labels: "Apply Tag" (highlighted with a red border), "Remove Tag," "Add Note," "Create Task," "Assign Owner," and "Edit Custom Fields." Each icon represents a different action that can be performed within the CRM system.

When to Use

Use the “Apply Tag” action when you want to:

  • Segment contacts based on their interactions, such as form submissions, link clicks, or purchases.
  • Track progress through a flow, like marking contacts who complete a specific step.
  • Trigger other automations or campaigns by applying a tag that serves as a benchmark.
  • Categorize contacts for personalized communication, such as identifying interested leads or loyal customers.

How It Works

The “Apply Tag” action adds a predefined tag(s) to a contact’s profile when they reach this step in the flow. The tag is stored in the contact’s record and can be used for segmentation, reporting, or triggering other flow steps.

The image shows a segment of a flow. On the left, there is a green rectangular block labeled "Apply Tag 1" with the word "ADD" above it, indicating an action to add a tag. This block has a small plus icon above it, suggesting it’s part of a sequence where additional actions can be inserted. To the right, there is a white panel titled "APPLY TAG SETTINGS," with a section labeled "Apply all of the following tags..." Below this, there’s a text input field with a placeholder that says "Type to search..." and an "X" button next to it, likely for clearing the input.

Setup Instructions

  1. In your flow, add a new action step.
  2. Choose Apply Tag from the list.
  3. Select, search tag(s)

Example Use Case

Imagine you run an e-commerce store and want to tag customers who purchase a specific product to send them a targeted upsell email. To achieve this, you can set up a flow in Groundhogg that starts with a “WooCommerce Order Completed” Trigger to trigger when a purchase is made. Next, include an “Apply Tag” action to assign the tag “Bought Product X”. Finally, incorporate a “Send Email” action to follow up with an upsell offer for related products. As a result, only customers who bought Product X will be tagged, enabling you to segment them for personalized campaigns, such as offering accessories or discounts.

FAQs / Troubleshooting

Q: Can I apply multiple tags in one action?
A: Yes, select multiple tags in the action settings.

Q: What happens if the tag doesn’t exist yet?
A: If you type a new tag name in the settings, Groundhogg automatically creates it when the action is saved.
