Why is my license not being recognized?

Published · Last updated

If your site says your Groundhogg license is invalid or expired, but your account shows it’s active, the license most likely isn’t registered to the site you’re using. A license is tied to the site URL it was activated on, so if that URL changes, the new address isn’t recognized.

Why this happens

This usually comes up after one of these:

  • Your site’s URL or domain changed.
  • You activated the license on a staging site or a temporary host address (like yoursite.wpenginepowered.com) and then went live on your real domain.
  • You migrated to a new host.
  • You restored a backup from another site.

Renewing your license doesn’t fix this on its own. Your renewal is still valid, the site just needs to be registered.

Option 1: Re-activate from your site

  1. Copy your license key from the licenses page in your account.
  2. In your WordPress admin, go to Groundhogg > Settings > Licenses.
  3. Paste your license key and click Activate.

Option 2: Add the site from your account

  1. Go to the licenses page in your account.
  2. Click Manage Sites next to the license that isn’t being recognized.
  3. Enter the full URL of your site, for example https://yoursite.com, and save it.

Still seeing an expired notice?

Your site saves the last license status it received, so a notice can stick around after the problem is fixed. Go to Groundhogg > Settings > Licenses and activate the key again to refresh it.

Each site you register counts toward your license’s activation limit. If you’ve moved away from an old site for good, remove it under Manage Sites to free up the activation.

If the license still isn’t recognized after this, contact support with your site URL and we’ll sort it out.
