Why can’t I activate my WaaS license on subsites?

Published · Last updated

With a WaaS license you never license subsites individually. One license key covers every subsite on your network, whether it uses a subdomain, a subdirectory, or its own custom (mapped) domain.

How licensing works on multisite

  1. Activate your WaaS license on the main site of the network only.
  2. Install the White Label extension, which is included with your license. You can download it from your account or install it with the extension helper.
  3. Go to Network Admin > Plugins and network activate both Groundhogg and the White Label extension.

That’s it. Every subsite on the network is now licensed automatically. Updates for Groundhogg and its add-ons are handled through the main site, so subsites will not show a license notice or ask for a license key.

Custom and mapped domains

Subsites with their own domain are covered exactly the same way as subdomain or subdirectory subsites. As long as they are part of the same network, no extra licensing is needed.

Still seeing a license notice on a subsite?

If a subsite asks for a license, or features that need a license (like email inboxes) won’t enable, check the following.

  • The White Label extension is network activated, not just activated on individual sites.
  • Groundhogg itself is network activated.
  • The license is active on the main site of the network and has not expired.

Do not try to activate the license on each subsite. Each activation counts against your activation limit and is not needed.

Note: The WaaS license covers a single WordPress multisite network. It is not compatible with multi-tenant systems.
